Home Alone (1990) Duration: 1 hour 53 minutes

picture1‘Home Alone’ is such a perfect kids’ fantasy, it’s a wonder nobody thought of it before. The film stars Macaulay Culkin as Kevin McCallister, a boy who is mistakenly left behind when his family flies to Paris for their Christmas vacation. Kevin initially relishes being home alone as he can eat ice cream and watch movies as much as he likes, but soon has to deal with these two burglars played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern. Four sequels followed after this successful film. Every Christmas in the US, this movie would be played as a classic on the TV for the family to enjoy and spend time together.

 It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes

picture2Based on the short story and booklet The Greatest Gift, written by Philip Van Doren Stern. A guardian angel is sent from Heaven to help a desperately frustrated businessman by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed. The film is now among the most popular in American cinema and because of numerous television showings in the 1980s has become traditional viewing during the Christmas season.

 Bad Santa (2003) Duration: 1 hour 38 minutes

picture3It’s a brilliant scheme: Willie T. Soke and his dwarfed assistant Marcus Skidmore are professional thieves. Every year, Willie disguises himself as a department store Santa Claus and Marcus disguises himself as an elf in order for both of them to rob shopping malls at night. But they run into problems when the conman befriends a troubled kid, and the security boss discovers the plot. A sequel, Bad Santa 2, was released worldwide on November 23, 2016. Both movies are rated R.

 Elf (2003) Duration: 1 hour 37 minutes

picture4This American Christmas comedy film stars Will Ferrell, James Caan, Zooey Deschanel, Mary Steenburgen, Daniel Tay, Edward Asner, and Bob Newhart. The story is about one of Santa’s elves (played by Will Ferrell) who learns of his true identity as a human and goes to New York City to meet his biological father (played by James Caan), spreading Christmas cheer in a world of cynics as he goes. This PG film is great to watch as a family, to warm your hearts on during the cold Christmas season.

Scrooged (1988) Duration: 1 hour 41 minutes

picture5Based on the Charles Dickens classic novel, A Christmas Carol, with a twist of humor and sentiment. Taking place on Christmas Eve, this PG-13 film tells the story of Frank Cross (played by Bill Murray) who is a selfish, inconsiderate and arrogant executive in the IBC television network headquarters. He then gets haunted by the three spirits – of the past, present, and future.

  1. I’ve seen all of these movies, and I can attest that they are all wonderful fun during the holidays. Nothing like a good comedy to pass the evening with the family. Thank you for reminding us all of what we can watch… next year?
